About the Artist

Julian Cobb

Julian Cobb is a multimedia artist that explores the subject of mental health, including its connection to the body, and the influence of society and popular culture on individuals. Growing up in Naarm (Melbourne), completing a Bachelor of Fine Art from Monash University and a Master of Arts Management (Curation) at RMIT University, Julian focuses on creating sculptural outcomes to better establish ethos between their work and audiences. Struggling with anxiety, depression, sexuality, and body dysmorphia as a constant throughout their life, Julian channels their experiences into their work hoping to establish connections with others and allowing people to foster feelings of comradery and empathy for others.
Julian works with many different mediums including fabric and embroidery, moulding and casting, hand sculpting, and digital editing and projection, Their philosophy when making artwork is that it should be approachable at first glance but contain layering of nuance to allow for further investigation and interpretation of each piece. Working across many mediums is just one way that allows Julian to place significance in the choices they make when creating an artwork, filtering their experiences into digestible outcomes for the viewer to contemplate as much as they desire.
