To me, mental health is managing and watching your own thoughts like passing cars. Sometimes thoughts can take over but there will always be calm seas behind the crashing waves that come and go. A self portrait exists as a portrayal of a second pair of eyes a new perspective on mental being. Through the survey we conducted we found responses of mental health being the potential to ‘engage positively with the world’ and ‘ self-sufficiency to deal with waves of ups and downs’. In this sense the individual appears empowered and stable despite these waves, noting down the feelings and challenges along the way.

About the Artist

Aisha Hara

Aisha Hara is a painter and Fine Arts student at RMIT. Mixed Asian-Australian background and navigating that in Australia influences my practice. Dreamy landscapes, figures in narratives with one another and intuitive gestures are a feature of my work. Through painting I hope to explore the human experience and relationships with identity that exists in Australia today.
